The access of public records such as birth, death, marriage and crimes are important as they contain vital information that is required in dealings with the government or any other company. Criminal records are important as they contain information or background of the person including any arrests made. The records are available by request through the official website or by emailing the person or office where the records are made available. Texas criminal records, for example, are available under the Public Information Act. The requests should all be made in writing, as telephone requests are not honoured. Information requests are also available by submitting the same to the site's Public Information Request Page as well as sending email requests to the sites official email address at OGC.Webmaster@dps.texas.gov.

The State of Texas official website contains the necessary information to check the criminal records. The person requesting the information can access several search queries including checking for registered sex offenders in the state, checking for criminal history convictions, anti-auto theft programs, Recovery and Identification for farm owners and registration of metal recycle companies.

The Sex Offender Registry of the State of Texas contains information on registered sex offenders. One can view the records as well as download the registry. The Criminal history conviction search contains information on criminal cases where the accused has already received conviction. Records available are limited to public information only and some cases, which contain juvenile, sealed, or expunged cases, are not available. The Recovery and Identification program is dedicated for farm owners who want to register their farm equipment with the government. This helps to track the stolen equipment easily. Last but not the least is the Anti-auto theft program or the HEAT that is dedicated to help people whose vehicles were stolen.

For criminal records, the State of Texas provides the public with the Conviction Database. The database is composed of records that are gathered from the DPS -CCH or the Texas computerized Criminal History System. The records include those reports such as arrests and convictions made in Texas that are classified as Class B misdemeanour. Some records might be restricted and not available for public.

To request for criminal records history, the person requesting must follow the guidelines in the CR-63 and follow the procedure for review of personal criminal history record. For those records that pertain to cases with conviction or a grant of deferred adjudication, the person requesting can gain access online. Another way to obtain public record is by requesting the Office for the information. The person requesting must submit a request form including all the pertinent details or information of the case together with the $10 fee in check or in money order. They can send their request by mail, fax and email. It must be noted that the Department is not in any legal obligation to answer the request if the request is in violation of the Public Information Act.

Some also do offer full information for a fee. However, for those who are only looking for basic info, this is the best possible option to choose.
