One of the biggest worries that contractors and construction project managers have to worry about when they are planning and executing their construction projects is safety. The injury risks include possible falls from heights, getting hit by falling objects, slips and injuries caused by mechanical machinery. When accidents happen at the workplace, they create legal liabilities for the employees. This is the reason why Emmitt Nelson created a course to help contractors create safe working environments for their employees. The school if known as the Zero Injury Institute and these are the recommendations which he makes to keep the construction site safe from accidents.

First, he states that most of the accidents which occur at the workplace are caused by someone new to the job and who does not know the right safety procedures to be followed when carrying out tasks. He states that this is a problem which can be easily prevented by making sure that all new employees undergo rigorous training about the safety hazards connected with their line of work and how to stay safe.

The second way that you can make sure everyone on site is adhering to the set safety standards is through frequent crew meetings where safety is discussed. Even if the employees received their preliminary training on safety, time makes them forget the lessons which they learned, and they may start taking safety issues for granted. Regular meetings with the crew will constantly remind them that safety is still very important.

Emmitt also states that many employees still do not wear all the protective gear that they are supposed to wear when carrying out their tasks. In his modules, he observes that when employees are new in a situation, they wear the right gear, but when they become familiar with the job they start showing up without the right boots, hats, gloves and other protection clothing. The moment safety clothing is ignored, the risk for accidents doubles.

Lack of cleanliness and organization is another reason why employees have a hard time avoiding accidents in the workplace. Slip and fall accidents are common in places where spills are not cleaned up as soon as they occur. Similarly, workplaces where sharp tools and other machinery is left running or lying around carelessly is more likely to get accidents than places where cleanliness and organization is upheld. As long as the right mechanisms are used to clean up and organize workplace, safety will be maintained.

The other rule which works when trying to keep a safe workplace is ensuring all the equipment is maintained regularly. Poorly maintained equipment is more likely to cause a workplace accident than properly working equipment. Having a repair and maintenance schedule prevents this problem.

Then, he advises that the most effective way to handle accidents is mapping out the entire workspace, whether a construction site or a warehouse and note down all the possible sources of accidents. When the possible hazards have been mapped out, you can simply put in place measures to mitigate any accidents which will happen thereafter.

These are some of the things which can be done to make sure your workplace stays safe. As long as the employees completely understand their role, and they are willing to play it well, there will be no regrets. Remember that failure to uphold safety in your company can cause you lots of losses like money and employees sustaining injuries in your company, which can get you behind bars.
