Common Techniques Used By Earthquake Retrofit Companies

To modify buildings so that they can withstand seismic activities, seismic retrofitting is usually done. There are several techniques that are usually used. The main aim is to make electives more resistant to ground motions and soil failure. Therefore, in case of harsh climatic conditions that may cause motions, the buildings will be safe from damage. There are so many Earthquake Retrofit companies that are coming up. This is because of the high demand especially in areas that are more prone to earth activities. The following are some of the common techniques.

To begin with, the first PRESS approved technique is called external post-tensioning. This is a method that has been applied for many decades since its approval. In case you are wondering, PRESS is research body that has been there for decades, and it operates in Japan and the U. S of A. The scientists spent sleepless nights looking for ways to curb the impact of seismic activities.

Base isolation is the second method. It is applied by using base isolators. These isolators collect any structural elements of an elective and use them in decoupling the building. This means that the others building structures become intact even when there are ground movements. Therefore, this method enhances the integrity as well as seismic performance of the electives. Hence, if you live in with frequent earthquakes, this technique will protect your building.

The third method is by the use of supplementary dampers. These dampers absorb the energy and motion during seismic activities. The absorbed energy is converted to heat. Therefore, the effects are damped into the structures that are attached to the ground rigidly. Nevertheless, when the damping process continues for several years, the building can become weak. All in all, this is also a very effective technique.

Another critical technique used is called TMD. This is a technique that employs tuned mass-dampers. Here, movable weights attached to spring-like things are used. These mass dampers are normally used in very tall buildings to reduce the wind sway. Therefore, this technique can also be used in seven to ten several buildings. They thus impart seismic activities in tall buildings located in areas that highly prone to earth movements.

Another technique called slosh tank is used. A large slosh tank is used here. Then, water or another low viscous liquid is used to fill the tank. Then, this tank is taken to the rooftop and placed there. This is because the roof is prone to lateral motions. This tank thus counters the lateral motions that might take place.

The next technique is known as the active control-system. This method is used in buildings that are extremely tall. Usually, most modern buildings are constructed using materials that are light-weight. Hence, during strong winds and earth movements, the structures may start to sway. This method thus makes the buildings stronger.

These and many other techniques are used today to strengthen buildings. Hence, if you happen to live in areas prone to earth movements, soil failure or strong winds, protect your house. You can use the most appropriate method for your structure. The retrofitting company will advise you on the best.
