Architects are professionals whose job involves designing, planning, and reviewing construction of buildings. The profession itself is called architecture. Being a practitioner of architecture means that one provides services that are related to the design of buildings and the spaces that surround the building as well. During undergraduate degree, students cover topics such as computer-aided design and drafting, building and construction, and architectural theory and history.

In the event that a person already holds a degree in an entirely different field like construction management, they may go for a master of architecture degree. Individuals who wish to pursue further specialization and already hold a bachelors degree in architecture can enroll for a Master of Architecture degree because it is open for individuals with this level of academic achievement. Such individuals can specialize in areas like historic preservation, solar design, and design theory.

The level of training and experience possessed by an individual in the architectural profession determines the duration one take to attain a master degree. Basically, one to five years is the duration most people take. An individual may take two years to attain a master degree if one possess a bachelor degree in architecture. However, others may take three years to attain the master degree, particularly people possessing a bachelor degree in an entirely different field.

Earning a license after completing all necessary academic requirements requires one to complete paid internship, which lasts for three years. One must also take and pass an architect registration exam. Those who fail may need to retake the test some other time in the future. Interns usually work under the supervision of more qualified architects and help designing projects, preparing CADD drawings, writing specs, and building models.

In order to keep their licenses, licensed architects must pursue continuing education as required. As such, licensed architects must find ways of staying updated in this field. This requirement can be fulfilled by attending classes, workshops, and conferences.
