Craft beer is produced in a craft brewery, which is also known as microbrewery. Microbrewery refers to a brewery that is engaged in the production of beer, but is very small amounts. The scale of production is usually smaller than in large-scale corporate brewing. The plant that produces craft beer is also usually owned by an independent individual. Characterization of these breweries may be based on various factors such as brewing technique, flavor, and quality of the product.

The microbrewing industry started to emerge in the 1970s in the UK. However, artisanal brewing has several centuries of existence in Europe before spreading to other continents. The concept of microbrewing expanded and soon led to the emergence of the more encompassing concept of craft brewing. When in need for craft beer near Onalaska, there exists several pubs and stores in the area that one can visit.

Originally, the use of the term microbrewery reflected size of breweries. Later, this stand changed as attitudes changed to reflect adaptability, customer service, experimentation, and flexibility. The introduction of this term in the United States happened in 1980s. Later, it began being used to refer to breweries that had an annual production of less than 15000 barrels. This is an equivalent of 1800000 liters.

Microbreweries use a different strategy to market their products from that adopted by large-scale producers. Whereas large-scale producers rely on low prices and advertising, microbreweries depend on quality and diversity. As a result of this approach, although microbreweries control less market, they have greater influence. This has made large-scale producers to acquire microbreweries for competition purposes.

The use of cans to package the product in this industry grew exponentially since 2013. Cans are favored for packaging this product because they offer several advantages. Beer that is packaged in cans cools at a faster rate and it is not affected by beer-degrading lights. Cans also require less room for storage or transportation, which makes them more portable. Finally, surface area is greater in cans to allow wraparound decorations and designs.

Wholesaling is the major way American microbreweries use for the distribution of their products. The traditional three-tier system is in wide use. Other producers use retailers to do the distribution. On the other hand, other producers sell directly to consumers through off-premises sales, tap rooms, and attached restaurants. Alcohol regulation is left to the states in the US, which leads to huge differences in laws among states.

There are four major markets for microbrewing in the United States. The first market is composed of microbreweries whose annual production does not exceed 15000 arrels. The second market is made of brewpubs that sell 25 percent of their production on site. The third market category is made of regional microbreweries whose production falls between 15000 and 6000000 US barrels.

The United States has the most established microbrewing industry. Only breweries established after the 70s are called craft breweries. However, the name may also be used for establishments that existed beyond 1970s but are similar in characteristics.
