To verify that the rail track is almost free of imperfections, regular inspection is carried out. Rail track inspection is regarded as a normal practice which is done to recognize any issues that may prompt any accidents or failures. This practice is being followed since numerous years.

United States was one of the first countries to encourage such type of inspections. Now, almost all around the world, this practice is regularly maintained in order to identify any defects. It is an unfortunate thing that still many accidents take place because of unfair management decisions and poor analysis done due to human error.

Both internal as well as external flaws can be identified if such inspection is done in a thorough manner. United States allots approximately a million dollar budget every year just to inspect rails for any sort of damages, defects or flaws. Whereas other countries set their budget according to their transportation needs. Once a defect is identified, then suitable measures are taken to prevent any further damage.

In the event that surrenders and defects are not rectified in a convenient way, they may prompt unnecessary mischances and in most dire outcome imaginable, derailment could happen also. Awhile ago, when engineering was not helpful, these kind of inspections were outwardly done. Auditors used to take after the train tracks and paid special mind to any harms or defects.

This method of inspection was flawed and did not prevent accidents from happening. Many accidents still used to happen and few trains went off the rail causing several people injured and sometimes deaths occurred as well. In order to minimize these accidents, in the year 1927 a rail inspection car with magnetic induction was made by Dr Elmer Sperry.

The technology has advanced since then, making it quite possible to use new methods that are more helpful in reducing the amount of accidents that take place every year. Such technology is able to identify damages even of minor nature and the authorities are able to keep their tracks in a suitable condition. It is important that whether you inspect on a weekly basis or monthly basis the whole track should be inspected all the times.

It is a fact that train traffic has increased over the recent years and it has become more heavier and more crowded which means regular maintenance is requires as well. Also, in order to enhance the journey times, train speeds have increased tremendously as well. This is the reason why a more quick and efficient inspecting is required. Laser technology is also used in this process in order to keep a track on railway geometry.

It can be observed that more advanced technology is on the way which will improve the abilities to inspect in a more thorough and precise manner. Newer models of rail inspecting cars are operating out there and all of them are fully equipped with the latest technology gadget.
