People are going to have wants and needs. Now, it used to be that the goods required to have those wants and needs met was transported by boat. Trade essentially worked like this, goods were produced in one country, an explorer from another would come by, trade their goods for the products of the producer, and then sail home and everyone involved in the expedition would be rich. In fact, it still works very much like that today, since airplanes are not yet strong enough to haul massive quantities of goods. As such, the import and export business is still very much reliant on boats and trucks.
