Golfing is one of this world's favorites pastimes. Many men and women are passionate about the sport and enjoy spending free time on their local fairways. It may have a reputation as a wealthy person's recreation, but golf course builders develop all kinds of links for different segments of the population. Not all of the work they do is for the most privileged.

For the average golfer with limited means there are municipal courses available in many areas of the country. These are owned and operated by local governments and are open to the general public on a seasonal basis. Most of these links are fairly undemanding and straightforward to play. They tend to be very affordable and are good places to teach sons and daughters, who are interested, how to get started playing.

Public courses are also open to everyone for a fee. Most of these properties are owned privately and are for profit businesses. The fees here are usually still reasonable, but higher than the government owned links. They also tend to be more upscale and challenging. These courses often have practice putting greens and designated areas where you can improve your swing.

Most local country clubs and private membership courses allow their members to enjoy the links for a modest fee. They almost always have amenities such as golfing carts and golf lessons taught by the establishment pros available for an additional cost. Guests are welcome, but must pay to play.

Some resorts throughout the world are best known for their fabulous golf courses. Guests plan their vacations around the tournaments and championships that are played there and love to try their hands at the unique fairways and tricky greens. The public can often participate in golfing here, but the guests have first choice when it comes to tee times and discounted green fees.

Executive courses are built with busy professionals in mind. They might be private or public, but are generally shorter than the regulations links. This makes it quicker for the average golfer to play a round of nine or eighteen holes. They tend to have more par three holes and fewer four and five par holes.

There are approach courses that are great places for beginners to get a feel for the game. Their fairways are shorter and easier to master. It is also a good place for weekend and occasional golfers to practice swings and putting. Of course you can always find nine hole courses that are quick and easy. You might even want to play more than one round on one of these properties.

However deep your financial pockets, if you want to try your hand at this sport, that frustrates and fascinates so many, you have plenty of choices. You can really spend as much or as little as you want.
