Being a point of entry, this small New Mexico town sees a lot of traffic. From commercial and non-commercial vehicles to pedestrians crossing the border, it has rapidly become one of the busiest small towns in the state. As the port is one of the fastest growing and busiest in the area, it has become popular with legal and illegal immigrants. Whereas, others are held at a local American or Mexican border detention facility.

For those entering the U. S. Legally, Mexican travelers often discover that the point of entry provides more convenient and rapid access than the border crossing in El Paso, Texas. For others, it can still be a dangerous crossing, especially for those attempting to cross illegally. If caught, individuals are generally re-directed back toward Mexico, or held at a local detention center for processing.

There are many different services available at this point of entry. These include commercial and non-commercial traffic inspections and processing, pedestrian walkways, custom brokers and livestock crossings. Individuals desiring to export vehicles can also obtain permits at this port.

The port is open daily to pedestrian, non-commercial and commercial traffic. As with the United States and other locations, driving laws are often different for commercial and non-commercial vehicles. When using a rent-a-car to cross into Mexico, it is important to inspect the vehicle carefully to assure previous customers have not left any drugs or anything else behind. If so, it can often be difficult to convince border control that the items belong, or belonged to someone else.

The facility is the only port in the area which processes most exported used vehicles for resale in Mexico. Both commercial and non-commercial vehicles can be processed through this port. There are also several hundreds herd of cattle which make this crossing each year. Thus, making this one of the largest import/export facilities for commercial and non-commercial vehicles and livestock along the border.

When it comes to aircraft, the local customs and border protection agents control international operations at the nearby county airport. After which, aircraft can then proceed to the United States or Mexico. The border agents also oversee foreign trade. In doing so, the agents are looking for all legal and illegal items being imported or exported whether from, or to other countries.

United States citizens wishing to adopt an orphan or orphans can easily access Santa Teresa, New Mexico off I-10. When adopting an orphan, it is important to have United States and Mexican attorneys approve the process. As such, if needing to travel to Mexico as part of the process, one can take I-10 to Exit #8, then drive twelve miles to the border crossing. It is important to note that the road will change from a local road to a highway before reaching the port.
