Prior to the release date of The Force Awakens, part 7 of George Lucas' epic series, a small orange and white robot was taking the world by storm. BB-8, a rolling robot, appeared for a few short seconds in a clip from the movie and won hearts all over the world. Fans are now able to purchase their very own BB-8 as part of a range of star wars action figures either online or in stores around the world.

Since George Lucas first hit our screens in 1977 with the first movie, the series has become a huge hit. Starting at part 4, A New Hope, intrigued viewers and inevitably they were taken back in time with the release of parts 1-3 more than 20 years later. With each movie came a new set of heroes and villains.

The two most famous robots in the original release were R2-D2 and the gold droid C-3PO who have appeared every installment. Collectible figures costing a few dollars were issued when the first movie was on screens and they now command big money if they are in mint condition. To find these two original toys in original packaging now is quite rare and you can expect to pay in excess of 300 dollars for each figure.

The original series of action figures was produced by Kenner and it is these "earlybird" toys that are most sought after by collectors. When purchasing one of the rarer models, the packaging is of utmost importance. Without packaging the figure can be worth just a few dollars and not truly collectible.

This first set of toys had cardboard backing with pictures of other characters on the back. These have become known as 12 backs and are extremely collectible for enthusiasts. With the release of other movies in the series, 21 backs as they are known became available but these are far less valuable than the early sets.

Following the purchase of Kenner by Hasbro, all the toys are now licensed through Disney, so modern collectors can continue to expand to include the new monsters and robots. A true fan could stage their own version of the movies in miniature thanks to the range on offer. Most popular are the small die cast models which make great presents for fans of all ages.

Those wishing to have a fully animated model can opt for one of the ones which talk and are interactive. Once again the popularity of the adorable BB-8 makes it a great buy as it is sure to be highly sought after by future generations of enthusiasts. It has been reported that there is at least one homemade fully functioning BB-8 but this is not likely to ever come onto to the market.

There are many online sites where you can buy these collectible figures. Auction web sites, toy stores and movie memorabilia stores are all good places to find an R2-D2 and other famous characters. Due to the high value of some of these items it is worth speaking with other collectors or toy experts to avoid making costly mistakes. Always check the authenticity of your potential purchase and ask any questions you have before buying. If you are having your purchases shipped to your home then make sure they are insured against and damage or loss during transit.
